cui xiuwen.
the first artist to look at was cui xiuwen. i found her self portraits to be very interesting. almost every portrait was her wearing a white dress and being placed in some sort of isolated environment. if there was anything else with her it would be other replicas of herself. most of the figures were sort of placed very haphazardly. they often look very awkward and out of place in the work. when the figure was facing up she had her eyes close. i think what this says about her is she is not aware of confronting her viewer but more just being the subject of the work.
cindy sherman.
cindy sherman's portraits were somewhat different than cui xiuwen's. cindy sherman put herself into different characters when she created. she had a scene where she was meant to look like the lead in a hollywood movie. the portrait's were not about her, but about the character and how she could be so many different ones. portraits often times are meant to show something about the person. cindy sherman is just proving exactly what she is not. she is doing this in many different ways and scenarios.
frida kahlo.
frida kahlo's work was my favorite out of these three artists. surrealism is one of my favorite types of art and i really respect her work. what i really like about her portraits is what i think the other two artists lacked. her portraits were straight on her looking right at you, and there was symbolism to represent herself. she really knew who she was and what she was about in her life. i really liked that about her work. i also loved the way that she painted. the colors that she used really added a lot to everything and she had a clear point. she was always the main subject of her own work and in a self-portrait i think that that is very important.
